Snakes Downunder
Your host Ian Jenkins
Ian Jenkins has been handling snakes for over 40 years so don't get the idea you can do this with these types of snakes in the wild they will bite you if you try. Spending part of his childhood in Kenya, he had many opportunities to handle snakes but it wasn't until coming to Australia that his ambition to handle deadly snakes was fulfilled. Oz Magic has never seen a snake handler handling snakes the way Ian does, he is able to handle these deadly snakes because of years of gaining the trust of each snake by handling them daily from a young age and gaining their trust.
Through his presentation Ian hopes that you will come to understand a little more about our native reptiles and their place in our environment. There are two snake shows per day the first starts at 10.00am and the second snake show with different snakes starts at 12.15am. There is also a crocodile show starting at 11.15am.
Snakes Down Under is affordable entertainment for the whole family to enjoy and Oz Magic found the rates extremely reasonable for a family of 4. Nestled amongst the palms, gum trees and native shrubs, the snake arena is surrounded by landscaped rock walls, gardens and a nearby pond and waterfall.
The snake arena provides a safe and secure position to view these hypnotic reptiles in a relaxed informal atmosphere where you have the opportunity to ask questions and take photographs as each of the twelve or more venomous and non venomous species are being handled.
In the demonstration Ian will dispel the idea that the only good snake is a dead snake. You will see that even though he will be sharing the arena with some of the world's most dangerous snakes they pose no threat as long as they are treated gently and with respect.
Snakes are a fact of life in Australia, as well as learning about their habits Ian will show you that you can get along with snakes and, in the case of potentially dangerous species how to avoid contact.
However accidents happen and although snakebites are relatively rare in Australia it is well worth learning the very simple but extremely effective first aid treatment for Australian snakebites which are demonstrated during the show. With an emphasis that this sort of treatment is for Australian snakes only.
You will have an opportunity to handle both a snake and a young crocodile without the inconvenience of long ques. Photo opportunities are available for snakes, crocodile and lizards so don't forget to bring your camera.
A recent addition is Binja the young saltwater crocodile. At Snakes Downunder Reptile Park you have the rare opportunity to hold one of these evolutionary survivors of the past.
You can find Snakes Downunder Reptile Park in the town of Childers 309 kilometres north of Brisbane. If you are departing Hervey Bay after visiting Fraser Island Childers is on your way north to the Whitsundays or Cairns so why not drop in. Oz Magic highly recommends this attraction as educational and interesting with plenty of opportunity to take great photos you would not get elsewhere.
The park is open 6 days per week from 9.00am to 3.00pm (closed Wednesdays). There are 2 snake shows, 2 python and baby crocodile handling opportunities and 2 (large) crocodile feedings per day.
Snakes Down Under is on the same road as Mammino's world famous Macadamia nut ice cream factory so now you have two reasons to head out there when you are in the Childers area.
